Pastor Joe preached Matthew 22:1-14. The music theme focused on God's character. The other pastors and many of our people were gone to Newburgh (daughter church) for the ordination of their pastor (Eddie Goodwin).

I thought you might elaborate on Pastor Hartland's message especially in regards to music, brother Dave. He certainly gave the opening with his statements that we should eliminate unnecessary hinderances and that unbelievers should at least "dig" our music. What a great point! I loved the point he made about how too many people we sometimes seem like the Amish and since we know longer dress, why are we singing their stuff? There is so much good stuff out there that we don't even know about because we are still stuck in the past. I say this anonymously cause I know people will think I'm nuts but I wouldn't mind if we played some stuff from certain Christian rock bands or even brought one to our church so that we might be able to reach some of the lost. Isn't that the kind of thing Pastor Hartland was talking about?
ReplyDeleteMy brother,
ReplyDeleteI was in a serious (and gracious) discussion after church Sunday night (and last night again) about the implications from his sermon. Perhaps others have also been thinking it through! Let me respond in a separate post. Thanks for stirring the discussion.
David
Maybe Steve Hartland has stirred the pot a bit but will it result in the kind of musical progress some of us are longing for? Otherwise, maybe we don't reach certain types of people, and maybe we don't feel comfortable inviting certain people because they think our church is still living in the 1600's. Why can't we move a little more contemporary so that we might win, win, win, save some and more. And while we are at it, why not dress down a bit to make others feel more comfortable? Why can't we follow the apostle Paul's example and appeal to the lost and not offend them with things that are not essentials? Let's give up our archaic heritage for the sake of seeing more people under the preaching of the gospel. Let's win more. Looking forward to hearing much more about this from Brother Dave and the Pastors.
